The Sixth Sun
Praise be to Tlaloc, who is the rain and storm, ruler of the Heavens.
Tlaloc wears the form of a handsome warrior, whose eyes are lightning and whose voice is thunder. He carries with him a great club, that shakes the earth and causes earth quakes.
It is said that Tlaloc once sought to marry Itzpapalotl, but she refused him. To show to her his greatness as a husband, he spread his flesh upon the earth and made the soil of her people ferile.
When she was not impressed, he spilled his blood, and his blood watered the crops of her people.
Still she was not impressed, so he sent winds to chase the clouds and the light let the crops of her people flourish.
Yet still she was not impressed, and so Tlaloc despaired. With his sorrows the earth grew fallow and could and winter fell upon the world.
Seeing this Itzpapalotl was filled with sorrow, and went to Tlaloc in the Heavens. There they struck a deal- that every year Tlaloc would send rain and sun and soil to Itzpapalotl’s people, and in return she would lay with him once each season.
Tlaloc is prayed to for rain, for harvest, and for protection from quakes and floods.
